Artvoice Feature – WNYBAC Members Show 2011

how cool!Heya! Long time no type. I’ve been busy with freelance and also my new comic, Squid Salad. Also, I’ve been doing a lot of travel to anime conventions where I sell cute art and handmade buttons. More on that later…

Today was most excellent, as Artvoice chose to feature Honey & the Whirlwind by Tim Ferrara for the second time.  We’re both proud members of the WNYBAC, and as such are exhibiting in the member show. Also featured in the article is a hand made stab stitch book by myself. It contains sketches with the theme of Cherry Blossom Dream. It was made with Washi paper and I quite enjoy doodling in it with copic markers. (You might remember some of my handmade books from this post: link )

Go check out all the amazingness at the Western New York Book Arts Collective!
The show is on view till July 9!

Pray for Japan

It’s been a while since I’ve posted here. I’ve been very busy working with White Bicycle on the Trimania event. I was due for some update info on here, but there are more important things in the world today. Pray for Japan and everyone who is affected by the earthquake. Donate to the Red Cross if you can http://www.redcrossblood.org! Licchan posted an excellent journal with resources here: link

Also my friend Phil (of Aborted Creativity fame) hasn’t been able to get in contact with his sister in Sendai, so let’s send some special prayers/wishes his way!

Dear everyone in Japan;
Please stay strong against
the earthquakes and tsunamis.
The whole world is praying
for your safety.

Emily Floyd (.net)

Emily Floyd is a fabulous actress and an amazing friend of mine. She lives in the Big Apple, where she creates really inspired and wonderful work. She’s just debuted her new website (with design/illustration/coding by yours truly) which I feel really captures her fun, quirky, and talented spirit. Check it out- Emily Floyd . net

Emily is in the highly anticipated upcoming first production of Crossing Brooklyn (a musical!) at The Michael Chekhov Theater on 45 street Jan 27th-30th. More details at Beautiful Soup Theater Collective.

Also on the horizon I’m looking to add some process entries and in depth looks at more recent works like Mike Brown’s American Hotel & Emily’s website above.

American Hotel is one of the most fantastic albums I’ve ever heard and with an equally fantastic story behind it, it’s pretty much a dream job. I’ve been working with the amazing Brian Grunert of White Bicycle fame (as well as the Morissey brothers)  to do some design for this project. Mike is going to be featured on an upcoming episode of American Pickers. I’ll leave you now to check out the site- I think it very much speaks for itself.

Handbound Books

I enjoy making handbound Japanese stab stitch books. I’ve also been working on some more sophisticated books, but for now I made a bunch of fun and cute mini books great for sketching and secret doodles.

I’ve been putting them up for sale on Singed Cat Studios’ Etsy book section {here} for just $10! The outside paper is made from super strong (and quite expensive) kimono pattern origami paper from Japan. The inside lining papers are manga from Japanese “phone books.” Attached to every book is a unique bookmark with tiny shiny gems and beads. The outside stitch and binding are made from super cute embroidery thread. Inside paper is smooth and perfect for writing secret thoughts and dreams, or for keeping special doodles and drawings.

Here’s my flickr set of all the luffily hand-bound stab stitch books I’ve made so far:

Letterpress

I just took wonderful Class by Shelly Kuzniarek of French Press in Buffalo, NY. My esteemed classmates (Doug & Brian) and I learned about letterpress and made type specimens on a Vandercook press! I used my tiny little hand-held camera to capture a few shots.
Letterpress is definitely my new obsession!

For a real treat, check out Doug’s photos of the workshop-
There are some real spiffy shots here:
